EN14604 – Smoke Alarm Product Standard (CE/CPR)
What is EN14604 ?
EN 14604 is the European product standard for smoke alarm devices, governing the safety, performance, testing, and CE/CPR compliance requirements for standalone smoke alarms used in residential buildings. It sets the minimum criteria manufacturers must meet for alarms to be sold within the EU/EEA under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR).
Key Features of EN 14604
- Performance Requirements: Specifies minimum alarm sensitivity, response thresholds, sound output (≥85 dB at 3 m), and resistance to false alarms, ensuring reliable smoke detection across various smoke types (e.g., smouldering vs flaming).
- Testing & Environmental Durability: Includes tests for temperature, humidity, corrosion, vibration, electrical safety, and long-term stability of optical chambers and sensors.
- Marking & Documentation: Requires CE marking, manufacturer identification, product designation, power source details, and compliant user instructions under the CPR framework.
- Power Supply & Fail-Safe Requirements: Defines backup battery behaviour, low-battery warning thresholds, and conditions under which an alarm must continue to operate safely.
- Product Types Covered: Applies to standalone smoke alarms, including optical/photothermal detectors as used in Ei Electronics products such as the Ei146RC, Ei650 Series and others certified to EN 14604.
